Department store or Drug store?

This is always a controversial subject when i'm workin it on the retail freelance salesfloor because of course being a veteran in retail cosmetics.. sales goals need to be met and our sole goal as a makeup counter girl is to convince you that you need to buy our $25.00 mascara and forget the $5.99 greatlash. Well in all fairness I am off the clock right now!

Lets first address Dept. store mascara vs. drugstore, when it comes to this I guess you can call me a mascara snob. My favorite mascara was, is and always will be Diorshow and at $25.00 its a little investment but a good one in my opinion. I cannot say the same thing about Lancome or Estee lauder mascaras though, they are sticky, clumpy and dry as the mohave desert and at over $25.00 a pop, a bad buy. I would rather buy greatlash, maybelline or covergirl mascaras than invest in them! I've had countless free samples from them to say otherwise. As for the rest of your beauty kit, it depends. If your buying foundation, I can recommend drugstore brands that work just as well or even better than oily estee lauder or acne causing lancome bases(Can you tell i'm not a big fan of those brands? lol). Some lines are head to head with drugstore brands and powders are just as flexible too. My favorite powder used as a setting powder over liquid or cream foundations or used as a foundation itself is Hello Flawless from Benefit. This foundation is AMAZING, especially for oily acne prones like myself. It has full coverage, is non-comedigenic as well as mineral infused.

My advice as a cosmetics junkie and professional makeup artist is this.. do your research on products, go try them out and understand that some makeup companies have both department store and drugstore lines so the quality going into both brands is or is almost equal. A department store is going to have expensive packaging or fancy french writing to list ingredient knowing full well that we don't speak french! A little story... this happened to me last week while at a retail establishment promoting a new skincare line. It had been awhile since I was at this certain store and my last visit there I was covered in acne breakout! It was horrible but a couple months later and a few emotional breakdowns later I emerged once again fresh as a daisy with gorgeous flawless skin and one Clarins beauty advisor noticed..she asked me, "Wow, your skin looks so good, much better than last time! What have you been using?" I proudly told her that I reverted back to my highschool skincare regime and starting using Avon's Acne solutions line again and that was why I was clear again. She stuck her nose up in the air and tried to tell me that I should care more about my skin than that and use clarins..I said "Honey, I already tried your line and it didn't work for me." She continued to try and sell me and when she couldn't impress me, crossed her arms and stated, "I will never use anything but Clarins." I said, "Good for you...sucker." lol. So lesson of the day, department store makeovers are fun and us sales girls are smart, experienced, fast talkers and working towards meeting sales goals so we can keep our jobs! Play around drugstore brands as well, some of them are awesome!
